Education & training

The Waterford Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre delivers training that aims to prevent sexual violence through greater awareness of such important issues as sexual consent, to volunteers and organisations. In 2024 we delivered training to SETU- South East Technological University. Moreover, in conjunction with RCNI we delivered training to Garda Divisional Protective Services Unit (DPSU) and HSE.

In addition, we provide specific trauma informed training to our SATU volunteers.

Our approach

Due to the sensitive nature of the issues being covered and the fact that they may resonate for participants, our training approach is participant-centered and invitational. Participation is encouraged but without pressure.

There is a strong theme throughout of the importance of developing resourcing strategies for the worker, and the prevention of vicarious traumatisation and burnout.

Our training is based on active learning methodologies including many different types of group interaction, such as collaborative learning activities in large or small groups, structured role play activities, groups discussion, information inputs and case history.
